Barracuda Bulletin: Week of January 10

Student Spotlight

Third grader Nolan Thompson has been part of the GHS community since he started pre-K. He says the teachers are helpful and the students are kind and respectful to one another.

“Ms. Robin always helps a student whenever they need it,” says Nolan of his third grade teacher.

Ms. Robin says Nolan is creative and smart.

“He has a really active imagination,” says Ms. Robin. “He loves to act and do theater. He’s really animated.”

Nolan is great at getting a laugh out of his peers and is a good partner during group projects.

“He encourages people,” says Ms. Robin. “He notices when someone isn’t having a great day and will do something fun to make them feel better.”

Nolan puts a lot of effort into his schoolwork and is a great friend to his peers, Ms. Robin adds. Nolan says math is his favorite subject because it’s interesting, and PE is his favorite special because “I’m working out and getting stronger and healthier.”

Nolan takes part in our after-school Lego club, where he’s building his favorite animal — a shark. During his free time, Nolan likes to play basketball and watch TV.

Upcoming Events

SAT PREP COURSE TO BEGIN JANUARY 27

GHS will offer an SAT course to help students prepare for the SAT test. The class will be on Mondays and Thursdays from January 27 through March 13. There is no school February 17 or March 3, so those classes will instead take place April 7 and 14. The course will cost $100 which includes the latest version of the Kaplan SAT Prep study guide with practice tests. Please sign up early, as the course is open to all St. John high school students and space will be limited. Click here to register for the course.

FARM TO TABLE DINNER JANUARY 31

Our second Farm to Table dinner of the 2024-2025 school year is coming up on Friday, January 31, at 5:30 p.m. Please join us for an evening featuring the flavors of Japan, exceptional service by our student team, and the joy of connection and conversation at our communal dining-style setup of eight eight-top tables. Click here to buy tickets for this event.

GHS GREEN & WHITE GALA AND AUCTION MARCH 1 - SAVE THE DATE!

Our 39th annual auction is set for Saturday, March 1. Guests can expect the signature activities that we’ve all come to know and love, from the dynamic blinky lights game with its Wall of Wine prize to our spirited live auction, featuring enticing prizes like villa stays, jewelry, and international and local vacations. We’ll close out the night with dancing under the stars to the sounds of Quelbe Resurrection. Tickets to this year's event will go on sale next week.

Not only is our annual auction one of the most fun community events of the year, it also supports the scholarships and financial aid that are awarded to the majority of our students, giving the island’s children access to the rigorous, experiential education that we offer at GHS. One hundred percent of the proceeds from this event go to supporting our financial aid program!

LOWER CAMPUS ACADEMIC AWARDS

Kudos to our Lower Campus students who met their math and reading academic goals for the month of December! We recognized these students with an assembly this week, where second grade did a wonderful job of presenting what they've learned about land forms. Students who met their academic goals were chosen at random from each class to enjoy an art party today.
